意大利格朗薩索（Gran Sasso）國家地下實驗室（位于地下1400米深處）DAMA實驗組從1996年開始選用放射性本底極低的碘化鈉晶體陣列來探測WIMP。實驗的初步結果觀察到了碘化鈉晶體中的原子核與WIMP粒子碰撞的效應也隨季節(jié)有微小的變化，即觀察到了它的年調制效應，并由此推算出WIMP粒子的質量至少比質子大50倍，引起世界科學界的重視。（右圖為安裝在意大利格朗薩索國家實驗室中的碘化鈉晶體陣列）中國科學家參加了此項國際合作。DAMA組的結果說明了有WIMP可能存在的初步證據，但美國斯坦福大學的科學家作了與DAMA類似的實驗，尚未能證實DAMA的結果。最后的結論還有期待國際上更多實驗的結果，例如，建在英國北約克郡(North Yorkshire)海岸博爾比(Boulby)地下1100米深處鹽鉀堿礦的英國暗物質實驗中心已經于2003年4月28日正式啟動。
